Split Tone Worksheet


I. Duotone using Solid Color

A.
Duotone in RGB Mode

1) Create a new Channel Mixer adjustment layer, Monochrome and adjust channel values to ensure that any color information is equalized while purusing maximum tonal range in RGB Mode.

* Set the values of 3 channels always equal to the sum of 100%.

2) Create a Solid Color adjustment layer and choose a warm color from the Color Picker
to employ for toning in highlight areas. Click OK.

3) Set the Blending Mode of the Solid Color layer to Multiply
.

4) Next, click the Layer options and choose Blending Options.

* Can also be accomplished by a right-click with mouse on active layer.

5) Adjust This Layers Blending Options by moving the black triangle past the middle of the tonal range. Split triangle by alt/click with the mouse allows for gradation of color change rather than complete removal.

* Preview the blending change and remove warm color from shadows areas.

6) Create another Solid Color adjustment layer to add a cool color to the shadow areas of the image. Click OK.

7) Next, click the Layer options and choose Blending Options.

8) Adjust This Layers Blending Options by moving the black triangle past the middle of the tonal range. Split triangle by alt/click with the mouse allows for gradation of color change rather than complete removal.

9) The final image provides extended tonal range by adding color to enhance depth perception in highlight/shadow areas.

* Warm colors tend to jump off the paper, while cool tones retreat.
