Split Tone Worksheet


I. Split Toning using Color Balance

A.
Split Toning in RGB Mode

1) Create a new Color Balance adjustment layer.

* Curves and Levels adjustment layers can also be used.

2) Click on Highlights in Tone Balance and add warm colors
. Click on Shadows in Tone Balance and add cool colors. Click OK.

* Feel free to overdue some colors, we will refine it in the next steps.

Activate the Layer options menu and choose Blending Options.

* Can also be accomplished by a right-click with mouse on active layer.

4) Adjust This Layers Blending Options by moving the black triangle to allow for cool colors in the shadows and adjust the white triangle to allow for warm colors in the highlight areas. Split triangle by alt/click with the mouse allows for gradation of color change rather than complete removal.

* Preview the blending change and remove warm color from shadows areas.

5) The final image provides extended tonal range by adding color to enhance depth perception in highlight/shadow areas.

* Warm colors tend to jump off the paper, while cool tones retreat.
